Every year I struggle to come up with an original gift for the kid’s teachers at the end of the Summer Term (and Christmas to think of it). Over the years we’ve given chocolates, homemade bookmarks, chocolates, mugs with cozies, chocolates….hmmm, I see a theme here!
This year I wanted to do something different and a bit more personal, particularly as Missy’s teacher isn’t returning to the school after the summer holiday. And obviously, it’d be nice if I could incorporate some crochet in to the gifts as well.
I remembered seeing photos in one of my Simply Crochet magazines of crochet edged notebooks and thought that would make the perfect gift. The photos were in Issue Six and pointed to a fantastic tutorial on the Ruby Murrays Musings blog. Once I’d found the tutorial it took me a while to get started – there are too many lovely things to look at on Ruby Murrays Musings and I was totally distracted, pop over and have a look!
Anyway, back to it….Missy chose the notebook and I chose the yarn (Patons 100% Cotton).
Now the tutorial was great, really easy to follow, with step-by-step photos and a video, but I am an idiot and messed up the holes (I used a double hole punch as I didn’t have a single hole punch, so whilst I was watching the holes I was punching at one end, I was merrily punching holes all over the place further down the notebook!) I will be investing in a single hole punch for the future!
Not to be deterred by my daftness I persevered and trimmed about an inch off the notebook all the way around, re-punched the holes (paying attention this time) and got on with it, following the tutorial for the first round and then building up the stitches to create a wider edge.
This is the finished notebook. Although improvised in places and perhaps not exactly how I envisaged it, I’m pleased with the end result. I will definitely be making more. Hopefully, Missy’s teacher will like it too, particularly as Missy has written a lovely note in the cover.
Does anyone else struggle with end of term teacher’s gifts….or following simple tutorial instructions?
