Super Chunky Granny Square Cowl

I picked up a ball of Stylecraft Nordic Super Chunky yarn in a local shop a few weeks ago with no idea of what I was going to make with it. It was definitely an impulse buy and when I got home I thought to myself that I’d probably been a bit silly just buying one ball – what can you make with just one ball of super chunky yarn?

Well, it turns out you can make a nice little cowl.

Here’s a very rough pattern.

Yarn: Stylecraft Nordic Super Chunky Yarn
Hook size: argh! Can’t remember what size I used but am pretty sure it was an 8mm – sorry!

The cowl is made up of 5, two round granny squares which are joined on the second round using the Join As You Go method. The 5th square is joined to both the 4th square and the 1st square to complete the shape of the cowl. It is then finished with a granny square edge along the top and bottom.

Granny Square Number 1:
Chain 6 and then join with a slip stitch into the first chain.

Round 1
– ch3 (count as 1tr), working into the loop 1tr, ch2, 2tr, ch2, 2tr, ch2, 2tr, ch2.
– Join with a sl st into 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.

Round 2
– Sl st into the top of the next tr and into the first ch2 space of round 1 (so that you’re starting round 2 in the right place).
– Ch3 (counts as 1tr), ch2, 2tr in the first ch2 space of round 1.
– Ch1, in the next space from round 1 make 2 tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2tr, ch2, 2tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2 tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2tr, ch2, 2tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2tr, ch2, 2tr.
– Ch1, in the next space make 2tr.
– Ch1 then sl st into the 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.
– Fasten Off.

Granny Square Numbers 2,3 & 4:
Make each square as square number 1 but replace the ch2 and ch1 stitches of one edge of Round 2 with a slip stitch into the chain spaces of Round 2 of the square that you are joining to.

Granny Square Number 5:
Make as other squares but this time join to Granny Square 1 and Granny Square 4 to create the closed Cowl shape.

Border – do twice. Once along the top edge and once along the bottom edge.
– Joining in any space, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 1tr, ch1, *2tr in next space, ch1* repeat until you are back to the beginning (you should have 15 groups of 2tr) then sl st into the 3rd chain and the beginning ch3. Fasten off and weave in all edges.

Another picture from Matey. I can’t remember what he said this time but it was cheeky!

Do let me know if you have a go.
I’d love to see pictures x
